Built, Not Born: The Nirav Bhai Shah Story

Every legend has an origin story rooted in ordinary beginnings, and Nirav Bhai’s is no different — a story less about a straight line to the top, and more about a series of detours that each left him more complete than the one before.

The Foundation

It starts in 1992, in Sion, Bombay, where a young graduate from NM College, Mumbai, stood at a crossroads. Chartered Accountancy, at the time, could only be pursued after graduation — and that’s exactly the path he chose. By 1994, Nirav Bhai had qualified as a Chartered Accountant, having completed his articleship under none other than the legendary Pinakin Desai.

With this strong foundation, he returned to Gujarat to work alongside his father, himself a practicing CA. For three years, he immersed himself in the family practice — but something gnawed at him. The work felt too basic, too contained. He had bigger ambitions. With his father’s blessing, he set his sights on the Big Four. It took six months of persistence — applications, interviews, follow-ups — before KPMG finally said yes. That “yes” would shape the rest of his career.

The Unplanned Gift

India in the mid-90s was a country in flux, newly liberalized, and even the Big Four were still building out their practices here. Many departments were nascent, still finding their footing. Though Nirav Bhai’s articleship had been rooted in corporate tax, international taxation, and transfer pricing, the realities of the practice meant he found himself assisting a then-partner — a name that needs no introduction in Indian indirect tax circles: Bhavana Doshi.

For a year, he worked closely with her, and in doing so, quietly absorbed the nuances of indirect taxation — sales tax, excise, and more. What seemed like an unplanned detour turned out to be one of the most valuable gifts of his career, rounding him into the well-rounded leader he would become.

His KPMG years went on to take him across the globe — Europe, Singapore, and beyond — conducting tax due diligence for Fortune 500 companies and multinational clients. It was the kind of exposure he’d always wanted.

The Missing Piece

And yet, something still felt incomplete. The Big Four had taught him how to position value, command the right price, and advise with authority. But one critical piece was missing: execution at the ground level.

That missing piece arrived in the form of an assignment with a diamond industry client. He gave his advice in three months. Implementing it took three years. The client’s business was a maze — fragmented across sole proprietorships, trusts, and small companies, the kind of complexity only a sprawling family-run enterprise can produce. Rather than retreat from the chaos, Nirav Bhai leaned in. He stayed with this engagement until 2014 — including a stint in Dubai starting in 2006, where he helped the firm establish its headquarters and reshape its entire business structure. He was, in every sense, the man behind the scenes making it happen.

Building His Own

By 2014, having left the firm in capable hands, Nirav Bhai stepped out to build something of his own: Fame Advisory. Years of grassroots learning, advisory acumen, and an unshakeable command over the law had prepared him for this moment.

In 2023, he gave the profession something it had long been waiting for — his book on corporate tax, published by Taxman, distilling decades of hard-earned insight into a resource for the next generation.

Wisdom for the Next Generation

His advice to young professionals is simple but profound: read the law thoroughly, understand its implications fully, and never forget that the same provision can be read through multiple lenses.

The Man Beyond the Practice

Despite a demanding career, Nirav Bhai makes time — rare as it is — to give back. He delivers lectures, and true to his Jain values, finds quiet fulfillment in seva. Travel remains one of his few personal indulgences.

Humble, devout, and endlessly generous with his knowledge — this is Nirav Bhai.
